About

This is the official blog for the Legend of Zelda: Reclaim the Wild Tabletop Roleplaying System. Here, you’ll find the latest information on the system’s development, and perhaps some ideas for adventures, heroes, and foes for your own campaign.

What is Reclaim the Wild?

The Legend of Zelda: Reclaim the Wild is a freely-distributed tabletop roleplaying system made by fans, for fans, of both tabletop games and of The Legend of Zelda. It was designed from the ground up to enable players to create all new adventures in the world of Zelda, and specifically the hit game Breath of the Wild.

Why should I play Reclaim the Wild?

Reclaim the Wild offers a number of benefits to both Players and Game Masters, whether or not you’re interested in having an adventure set in the Zelda universe.

  • Open-ended, classless character creation enables you to make the character you want to play, regardless of archetypes, expectations, or stereotypes. Many of a Hero’s Traits are applicable in a broad number of situations, in and out of combat, ensuring players more opportunities to contribute to solving problems and overcome challenges.
  • Crafting is thoroughly integrated into every aspect of the game, allowing players to customize their weapons, armor, food, and more to suit the tasks and challenges they face.
  • Inclement weather, dangerous terrain, magical tools, tricky spirits, deadly traps, and evil doppelgangers – there are plenty of obstacles and dangers to face that can’t simply be overcome with a strong sword-arm.
  • The game’s math is simple and easy to understand, and almost all of it can be done between sessions – enabling you to play more and calculate less.
  • When a fight breaks out, combat turns are quick, and you’ll need to react to attacks even when it’s not your turn; this helps everyone stay engaged and “in the moment” while at the gaming table.
  • The monster creation system not only encourages interesting encounter design, but downright requires it as part of making Bosses.

Why did you create this system?

I’ve always loved Zelda games. I remember playing the original on the NES, my jubilation at beating Link to the Past, the awe of the expanse of Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time. So of course, I fell deep into The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild when it first came out. I put at least a hundred hours into the game, and didn’t find 100% of anything – Shrines, Korok Seeds, weapons, pictures, sidequests…

But I really, deeply enjoyed the game; more than I’ve enjoyed just about any video game that’s come out in the past few years. Once I beat the game, I got to thinking: “Man, I wish there was more adventure I could go on in this world. More places, people, items, dungeons, adventures, places to explore and rebuild… I guess I just wish that there were endless adventures in here.”

And that’s when I realized: I could just make a Tabletop system.

And it took me about two years, but… I did. And now you’ve found it!
